Smart App Banners are a promotional tool Apple provides to help advertise your app when a user visits your website on iPhone or iPad. Unlike the average third-party pop-up, these Smart Banners provide a streamlined and unobtrusive notification that is already familiar in form and function to Apple consumers everywhere. It’s a quick and effective way to drive more traffic to your app, and it’s relatively simple to implement. Forward this document to your developer or dev team to facilitate the process.
In order to get a customized banner like the above on your web destinations for iPhone and iPad users, simply include the following meta tag in the head of each page where you would like it to appear:
<meta name="apple-itunes-app" content="app-id=myAppStoreID">
In the app-id value for the content attribute, you will have to enter your app’s unique identifier, which you can find by doing the following:
- Go to the iTunes Link Maker, preferably using the Safari web browser (it can be glitchy in Google Chrome).
- Type the name of your app in the App Store’s search field, and select iOS Apps from the Media Type drop-down list.
- Once you’ve found your app among the search results, select iPad App Link in the column on the right.
- Your ID is the nine-digit number between id and ?mt. Replace the myAppStoreID value in the line of code above with this number. (Keep in mind, you cannot display Smart App Banners inside of a frame!)
The completed meta tag should look like the following, but with your app-id number instead:
<meta name="apple-itunes-app" content="app-id=588647136">
